Job Description

Job Title: Pharmacy Technician Job Specialty: Pharmacy Job Duration: Shift: 8-hour day, varied Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week Experience: License: Certifications: - CPHT certification or ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire - Must satisfactorily complete the Sterile Product Preparation examination within 90 days of employment and recertify annually Must-Have: - High school diploma or GED - Associate's degree or equivalent preferred - No drug-related misdemeanors or felonies on criminal record Job Description: - Procure, distribute, and enter patient information and medication orders per physician request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols. Enter patient information into the pharmacy database accurately and in a timely manner. - Fill physician orders, medication surgical kits, medication carts, or stock requisitions accurately and in a timely manner. Replenish medications in emergency crash carts or floor stock areas accurately and promptly. - Prepare intravenous admixtures or other sterile preparations accurately and in a timely manner. Deliver medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately and promptly. - Maintain adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and procedures. Assist in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations. Rotate stock to ensure use before expiration date and replace outdated and unusable drugs. - Restock medication and IV dispensing areas accurately within specified time periods. Repackage bulk medications in unit dose packages accurately following established procedures. - Contribute to the effective operation of the department. Enter charges and credits for patient medications accurately and in a timely manner. Generate reports and complete project work assignments accurately and in a timely manner. - Answer the telephone, identify self and department, and direct calls to appropriate personnel. Answer requests at the window while providing good customer service and make deliveries to patient care areas accurately and promptly. Organize and prioritize work assignments. - Maintain logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. File documentation in appropriate places. Keep pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well-organized. Keep pharmacy equipment clean and operational. - Participate in the quality improvement activities of the department, complete and document all assigned medication storage area inspections as directed by procedure, and identify and replace outdated and unusable drugs. - Collect data, conduct quality monitors, and complete documentation as assigned. Maintain competence required for current job title/position. - Maintain current technician certification or, in the case of new hire, acquire certification. Attend pharmacy staff meetings and participate in orientation, education, and training programs. - Review literature and other materials as assigned. Pass all tests and quizzes given and complete all competence/skills assessment requirements. - Comply with state and federal regulatory requirements related to the performance of operations and requirements of the Compliance Program, including but not limited to Service Excellence Standards, Compliance Policy, Safety and Infection Control, all department and organization-wide policies, and Federal and State regulations. - Participate in professional growth and development requirements and opportunities by attending department meetings, participating in required and voluntary educational programs and in-service meetings, reviewing current literature, and attending workshops and other developmental opportunities. - Perform other duties as assigned. - Observe for and report potential or actual process concerns and actively seek a resolution to the problem. Participate in department meetings and training opportunities to keep informed of changes affecting patient care and facility operations. - Meet the minimum annual educational requirements. Share knowledge and expertise by participating in training for co-workers and orientation of new staff. Provide a positive role model for co-workers. - Identify and participate in committees, performance improvement, and quality initiatives, and other activities that support the health center and department operations.
