BASIC FUNCTION Under general supervision, performs the translation and interpretation of written and oral communication for District and site-level communications, forms, and meetings including technical, complex, or sensitive topics/materials.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION:
High school degree or evidence of equivalent educational attainment.
EXPERIENCE:
One year of paid experience translating between English and a designated second language for organizations or groups.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS/INFORMATION:
A valid California Driver License and availability of private transportation or ability to obtain transportation between job sites is required. Must be available to attend night and weekend meetings and have the use of a personal telephone. Forty (40) hours of training for translation/interpretation with a certificate of completion is preferred.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES - Provide translation and interpretation services for district office, school sites, and the Board of Education to ensure cross-cultural understanding of intended issues, objectives, and accomplishments in a designated second language
- Translate documents and formal communications that may include technical vocabulary, idiomatic nuance, or sensitive/confidential information (e.g. IEPs, legal documents, district policies and memos, medical/enrollment registration forms)
- Use a variety of computer programs to recreate and properly format translated documents and communications materials (e.g. PowerPoint presentations) to match original materials
- Conduct consecutive or simultaneous interpretation (one-way or bi-directional) for a variety of district and school-site meetings, workshops, conferences, and special events (e.g. Board Meetings, School Site Council, IEP Meetings, SPSA, SARB), utilizing microphones, headsets, and related translation/interpretation technology as necessary
- Provide interpretation of recorded meeting and conversations
- Review and provide feedback for translation/interpretation work conducted in other departments or at school sites (e.g. newsletters, flyers, social media posts)
- Assist in the development and administration of in-service trainings for district staff regarding job-related topics (e.g. language support services, building cultural competency)
- Maintain an accurate record of work requests and completed materials, preparing related reports as requested
- Perform related duties as assigned
JOB REQUIREMENTS KNOWLEDGE:
- Proper language usage (grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax) in English and a designated second language.
- Regional differences in word usage and idioms.
- Equivalents of general technical and subject-matter terms between translated languages.
ABILITY TO:
- Speak, read, and write effectively and accurately in idiomatic English and a designated second language.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Translator/Interpreter classification is differentiated from the Bilingual Community Liaison classification in that it conducts simultaneous oral interpretation in addition to assisting in the development trainings and evaluating other's translation and interpretation work whereas the Bilingual Community Liaison conducts consecutive oral interpretation while promoting positive relationships between school sites and students' families.
SUPERVISION AND WORKING CONDITIONS SUPERVISION Supervision is received from a district administrator or site principal. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities, but may train others and provide technical feedback to district staff regarding translation and interpretation work.
WORKING CONDITIONS ENVIRONMENT:
Works is performed in an office environment with frequent interruptions, moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Some work is performed off-site attending various trainings, meetings, and school sites.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations. Seeing to read a variety of paperwork, emails and other materials. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Sitting while operating a computer for long periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to file materials.

EXAMINATION PROTESTS:

ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY LIST:
This examination process shall be open to all qualified applicants and shall result in one integrated eligibility list. All eligibility lists shall be established in accordance with Personnel Commission rules and shall be established for a period one (1) year, unless otherwise noted, or until there are fewer than three (3) ranks of eligible candidates who are available. Candidates are placed on the eligibility list in rank order according to their final examination score. Final examination scores will not change, but ranking may change as other candidates are added or removed from the list.
ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT:
Generally, new employees start at the first step on the appointed salary schedule. When filling a permanent vacancy, a new employee may request a higher salary placement based on having training and experience that greatly exceeds the minimum qualifications. An employee may submit a formal request for advanced step consideration on or after the first day of employment. Education transcripts, training certificates, and additional references may be requested for verification purposes.

PREFERENCE POINTS: Seniority credit, based on length of service, is added to the final passing score of permanent employees. ELIGIBILITY LIST: Candidates who pass the examination will be placed in rank order on the eligibility list. Final selection will be made from the top three available ranks only. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: All potential employees must provide evidence of their identity and authorization to work in the United States before they will be hired. State law requires employees to provide proof that they have had a recent negative tuberculosis test result. All new employees are fingerprinted and conviction records, if any, are checked.
SALARIES, MERIT INCREASES & ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT: Salaries generally begin on the first step of the appropriate salary range. Permanent employees receive an increase after six months of continuous satisfactory service and equal raises based on merit at subsequent one year intervals for a total of five increases. Relevant experience and/or education in excess of entry requirements may permit employment at other than the first step. If employed at a higher step, salary increases are granted annually until reaching the end of the salary range.
BENEFITS: Permanent employees will receive paid holidays, sick leave, vacation and longevity benefits per bargaining unit contract or Personnel Commission Merit Rules. The District offers a comprehensive package of insurance benefits to full-time employees and their families, which includes major medical and dental. (Permanent employees who work less than full-time, but a minimum of four (4) hours will contribute an amount proportionate to the number of assigned hours for major medical and dental.) Employees belong to the Public Employees' Retirement System to which the District makes contributions approximately equal to those deducted from the employee's pay.
