Job Title: Recycling Maintenance Worker

Department: Solid Waste Management & Recycling

Starting Rate: $17.04 per hour

Dauphin County Solid Waste Management & Recycling is currently accepting applications for the full-time position of Recycling Maintenance Worker . The overall objective of the employee in this role is to be responsible for the collection of recyclable materials at all county-owned facilities. The employee in this role is also responsible for but not limited to performing the following essential functions for this position which are listed below:

Essential Functions of Job:
  1. Collects recyclable materials from all county-owned facilities; deliver to processor.
  2. Cleans up at recycling drop off centers ensuring they are clean and free of litter at all times.
  3. Shovels, snow blows and de-ices facility grounds/sidewalks during appropriate months at recycling drop off centers and the recycling center.
  4. Orders and stocks the supplies in a timely manner through the Operations Manager.
  5. Assists co-workers and Director as necessary.
  6. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Other Job Duties:
  1. Keeps tools and equipment clean and operational.
  2. Works overtime occasionally due to department related activities.
  3. Operates common hand tools such as brooms, mops, squeegees, litter pickers, brushes, rakes, shovels, ladders, step stools, vacuum cleaners, hammers, hedge clippers etc.
  4. Operates motor vehicle (box truck) to get to recycling centers and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  5. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Department Director.
  6. Performs other job-related duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
  • Receives occasional instruction and some supervision from the Department Director or Recycling Supervisor to daily work duties and special work projects.
SUPERVISION GIVEN:
  • None.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Works in all weather conditions.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS:
  1. Must possess ability to handle and control powered equipment and to perform minor maintenance on this equipment.
  2. Must possess knowledge of safety standards and techniques in order to push, lift, pull, and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds or more.
  3. Must possess ability to endure extreme cold and extreme hot weather to perform outside duties.
Minimum Education, Experience, and Training Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/TRAINING:
  • Graduation from high school or an accredited equivalency program.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • General or light maintenance experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  1. Must possess ability to read and follow simple oral and written direction from the Department Director or Recycling Supervisor.
  2. Must possess knowledge of safe working practices while working alone and with others.
  3. Must possess skills in operating motor vehicle safely, following prescribed routes.
  4. Must possess ability to load and arrange materials onto motor vehicle.
  5. Must be able to fully demonstrate knowledgeable in care, maintenance, and repair of tools and equipment.
  6. Must possess ability to work independently and others while managing work time effectively to meet deadlines.
  7. Must possess general awareness of hazards associated with using lightweight tools and equipment.
  8. Must be able to work occasional weekends, overtime, or comp-time.
  9. Must possess ability to use hand tools to remove snow and vegetation from walkways, paths from both recycling facility and recycling sites.
