Hello, 

I am writing to inform you of a research study opportunity and request your participation. I also invite you to share this opportunity with others in New Mexico who may meet the participation requirements.

You are invited to participate in the following research study: Mitigating Mental and Social Health Outcomes of COVID-19: A Counseling Approach .

  This study (IRB-FY2024-98) has been approved by the Idaho State University Institutional Review Board.

The purposes of this study include to understand the social and mental health impacts of a COVID-19 diagnosis on individuals in New Mexico and the impacts of a counseling program designed to support client needs related to COVID-19.

We are requesting your participation as a client in this study.

Please note participation in this study is completely separate from any other care or services you may receive; declining to participate will not affect your access, care, or relationship with providers.

Participation criteria include:

(1) is >18 years old

(2) received a COVID-19 diagnosis at some point in time

(3) reports experiencing economic, social, educational, healthcare, and/or environmentally related challenges due to their COVID-19 diagnosis

(4) is not currently receiving mental health counseling services

(5) has access to the internet

(6) resides in the State of New Mexico

(7) has not experienced active suicidal or homicidal ideation or active psychosis in the last six months.

Some aspects of this study will occur remotely, while others may occur in person. Participants will be asked to complete the following items:

• Complete a demographic/screening questionnaire, linked below (approx. 10 minutes)


• Complete three assessments online (approx. 20 minutes)


• Participate in a brief, recorded interview via Zoom to help confirm you qualify for the study (approx. 15-20 minutes)


• Engage in weekly, individual mental health counseling in person or remotely, depending on your preference (1 hour session /week; 12 sessions total)


• Attend 3 group counseling sessions (1 hour each)


• Provide the researcher with a weekly, signed, de-identified report from your counselor, confirming you attended individual and group counseling sessions


• Complete three assessments online (approx. 20-30 minutes)


• Participate in a brief, recorded exit interview via Zoom (approx. 15-20 minutes)

Participants will be compensated with physical Amazon gift cards on an incremental basis, as follows:

$15 for interviews with the researcher (2 total; $7.50 each)

$10 for completing assessments (at 2 points in time; $5 each time)

$60 total for individual counseling sessions (12 total sessions; $5 each)

$15 attending group counseling sessions (3 total session; $5 each)
