Job Title: Academic Tutor

Department: Intensive English Program 

Supervisor: Jeremy Samsoe

FLSA Classification : Non-Exempt

Schedule:  Regular, PT

Job Summary:

The Intensive English Program is a multi-ethnic, multinational organization with a staff and student body whose native cultures span five continents and over 25 countries. The Academic Tutor will work with the IEP staff to provide extracurricular and academic assistance to IEP students and the program. Responsibilities may include (but are not limited to): providing one-on-one or small group English tutoring to students, working as an in-class teaching assistant, guiding students to various EMU offices and services and advocating on their behalf, working with the Office Coordinator on student services projects, etc.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities: 
  • Strong communicative ability and intercultural awareness.
  • Ability to comprehend complex information in order to create queries, prepares reports, correspondence, coordinate information both manually and on the computer.
  • Ability to organize and maintain manual and computerized filing systems
  • Attention to detail for accurately preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Good memory skills for recalling dates, people, events, and records in order to retrieve information for reports and files.
  • Ability to have a professional and neat appearance.
  • Ability to set goals, prioritize and organize job tasks and workload in order to meet deadlines, ability to complete work in a timely manner and communicate progress routinely with the Director of Human Resources.
  • Interpersonal skills for assisting faculty, staff, students, applicants and other visitors, and insurance vendors.
  • Ability to use a PC and mainframe, a modem and software such as payroll, Windows, Microsoft Office (specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook) for preparing and processing payroll, queries, downloading computerized information, surveys, bills, and other types of correspondence.
  • Ability to operate commonly used office equipment such as a copy machine, fax, phone, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with a wide variety of constituents.
Education and Experience:

High School Diploma preferred. Prior experience teaching and working with non-native English speakers is preferred.

Physical Requirements: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must occasionally travel to meetings and conferences off campus, which may include some overnight travel.
