Description Summary :
The Supervisor of Grounds Maintenance (SGM) oversees turf, irrigation, equipment maintenance, Christmas lights and snow removal. The SGM leads and supervises maintenance and landscape crews who mow lawns, irrigate planting beds and perform other outdoor maintenance tasks.
Responsibilities - Receive instructions and work assignments from the Manager of Grounds & Botanical Gardens (MGBG). Coordinates and sets schedules for grounds maintenance crews and volunteer groups.
- Assists MGBG in implementing and enforcing ministry safety protocols and culture.
- Oversee maintenance of hard and soft surfaces including blacktop and gravel yards, grass and irrigation systems, snow plowing, vehicle maintenance and upkeep, operating and training of wheeled equipment (trucks, mowers, snow plowing equipment), assisting with overseeing contractor work and handling all assigned tasks by the MGBG, coordinating set up for special events.
- Oversee and perform seasonal grounds duties including, raking, planting, watering, mowing, cleanup debris/trash, weed whip fence lines, weed rock/mulch beds, snow plowing.
- Maintain the highest standard of grounds cleanliness; including street sweeping and maintenance of parking lots, lake, benches, and sidewalks.
- Regularly clean up trash in ditches, road sides, parking lots and landscaped areas.
- Ensure daily maintenance and upkeep of equipment and tools is performed.
- As a Supervisor, this position will become acquainted with all fleet equipment in order to operate safely and train; road grader, backhoe, auger truck, dump truck, tree spade, skid steer, street sweepers, mowers and snow plows.
- Assist other groundskeepers and volunteers in accomplishment of routine assignments and problem solving.
- Keep parking lot, walks and driveways/tram road clear of debris and litter.
- Use mowers to cut turf areas; performs minor repair and adjustments of equipment.
- Maintain lake gardens, including the lake itself.
- Maintain proper records of all the aforementioned items.
- Fertilize, irrigate and care for all turf areas.
- Trim trees, hedges, and shrubs; prepares and treats soil for planting annual color.
- Assist in keeping turf in balance with regards to insect and disease problems, seasonal mulching and dyeing of garden areas, fall leaf removal.
- Trash removal.
- Install drain tile.
- Install stone walls and patios; make repairs to asphalt and concrete; painting of outside structures.
- Operate small and medium size trucks and trailers.
- Operate power equipment such as bobcat, tractor, mowers, chainsaws, weed eater, blowers etc., operates hand tools such as pruners hand saw, hammer, shovels, rakes, pitch forks etc.
- Perform snow removal duties which may require unusual hours.
- Follow standard operating procedures for all tasks.
- Assist with Christmas light display.
- Assist with Horticulture as needed.
- And all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.
Qualifications REQUIREMENTS - Commitment to Christ and AiG mission
- Able to stay calm and work well under pressure, determine priorities and produce results.
- Two years or more of experience in Grounds Maintenance or related field
- Detail oriented.
- Able to communicate effectively with maintenance team, contractors and management and respond quickly to all areas of grounds maintenance.
- This position will require lifting 50-80 pound objects; frequent bending, walking, and standing; exposure to a variety of weather conditions for extended periods of time; exposure to chemicals which may present health hazards if not handled properly; exposure to dangerous power and hand equipment if not used properly.
- Preferred - Ability to: direct and monitor the work of volunteers; perform general gardening and grounds keeping work; use and maintain tools and equipment; communicate with the Museum guests on facility information, vendors, and contractors, follow written and verbal instructions; perform heavy manual labor; plan and perform basic landscaping functions; learn specialized procedures related to irrigation systems, lake management, equipment, landscaping, pesticide applications, etc.
Education & Experience - Any combination of education or job related experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities to perform tasks is preferred.
- Driver's license required.
