The Department of Human Genetics is currently seeking a full time Genetic Counselor 1. The Genetic Counselor 1 (Cancer) provides genetic counseling, education, and psychological support for those with genetic disorders, birth defects, positive newborn screening results or who are at risk for a variety of inherited conditions including cancer.

Core Job Functions

1. Provides services in response to a wide variety of referral indications, such as pediatric and adult genetics, cancer, and preconception.
2. Provides outreach and education to healthcare professionals and the general population.
3. Establishes and maintains partnerships with community and disease organizations.
4. Develops educational and promotional materials.
5. Speaks at engagements in schools or community centers.
6. Updates web content for the clinic to ensure accuracy.
7. Interacts with and supervises genetic counseling students and other medical trainees.
8. Assists with the design and implementation of teaching strategies and content for trainees, healthcare providers, and members of the community.
9. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information, according to federal, local, and state guidelines and regulations.
10. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

The Genetic Counselor provides clinical care, contributes towards research, and/or supports clinical laboratory services by using intermediate genetic counseling skills and competencies. This job level demonstrates advanced level of clinical practice skills in the area of expertise, and works independently in clinical care, education, research or other related area. This position is focused on cancer genetics.

1. Performs case preparation and follow-up independently, which may include obtaining medical records, performing literature review, making referrals, and other tasks.
2. Collects and evaluates patient medical and family history; performs genetic risk assessments independently, demonstrating expertise with risk assessment tools; provides clear risk information to patients and providers.
3. Assesses patients for eligibility into Undiagnosed Disease Network study.
4. Anticipates possible testing, coordinates outside testing with ease, interprets genetic test results, and communicates results to families and healthcare professionals.
5. Provides psychosocial assessment and counseling, formulates and implements a case management plan, and identifies resources. Documents all patient encounters.
6. Understands clinical and research area of expertise in order to work independently, and be able to identify when appropriate to consult with another healthcare provider.
7. Initiates and provides independent consultation to patients, families and other healthcare providers. Provides clinic development, coordination or management to contribute to success within area of expertise.
8. Demonstrates understanding related to genetic tests and the associated disorders provided by the laboratory; develops expertise in assigned testing area.
9. Develops and reports results, including generating and reviewing reports, calling out/explaining abnormal, preliminary, or stat results, and suggestions for appropriate follow-up consultations or testing.
10. Acts as a liaison for clients of the laboratories, providing information and technical support on appropriate test use, limits/accuracy, interpretation of results, reporting and/or follow-up of abnormal results.
11. Develops and presents/publishes educational materials related to laboratory testing, design and maintain Laboratory and product-specific websites. Develops and maintains clinical databases as needed.
12. Collaborates with others to design and conduct test launch activities; provides feedback from customers, national meetings, or other areas to actively contribute to the marketing and business planning for the laboratory in his/her area of expertise.
13. Utilizes curriculum design theory in all educational activities, including supervising genetic counseling students and other medical trainees. Develops lectures/courses, educational outreach activities/events, and creates/edits written educational materials.
14. Participates in opportunities for more in depth teaching, as schedule permits, to include course development, research mentoring, peer and community education.
15. Participates in research as a study coordinator, project manager and/or investigator. Stays current and abreast of changes as it relates to research compliance, changes in study design, appropriate research methodologies, collecting and managing data, as necessary, and contributes to publications related to the research.
16. Participates in divisional or organizational meetings, which may include journal clubs, case conferences, or other meetings.
17. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Core Qualifications

Education:

Master's degree from an Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) accredited training program or equivalent

Certification and Licensing:

Certified by the American Board of Genetic counseling (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG)

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.

Continuing Education: If not already certified, the genetic counselor should prepare adequately for board certification exam through job duties and review of appropriate resources. They should also pursue continued learning through attending appropriate local lectures, conferences, grand rounds, and/or regional/national meetings.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
  • Thorough knowledge of theories and principles of human genetics, as well as broad knowledge of genetic disease
  • Ability to tailor, translate and communicate complex information in a simple relevant way for a broad range of audiences
  • In depth knowledge of healthcare delivery
  • Maintains certification by attending at least one conference or educational event per calendar year
  • Shows effort to improve genetic counseling skills and knowledge.
  • Exemplifies interest in current research by submitting at least one abstract for acceptance at an annual conference, presenting a new research article to the department or publishing a manuscript.
  • Presents at least one lecture per year or a total of 3 lectures during time as a genetic counselor 1 to either professionals in the genetics community, students or the lay public.
  • Attends at least one event, support group, or fundraiser for a community organization unrelated to conference attendance.
  • Maintains active involvement in the education/supervision of genetic counseling, medical, and other students.
