Job Description
The Director of Business & Economic Development is a member of senior staff who works to promote the Park Heights community as a preferred location for businesses, focusing on both existing and prospective ventures. The Director of Business & Economic Development takes the lead, provides support, coordinates and monitors business retention, expansion, and attraction efforts.
The Director of Business & Economic Development will be a resourceful, pro-active, and self-motivated person with the ability to balance vision and mission with a practical understanding of economic development, innovative economic recovery strategies, and constraints within an urban renewal project area. The incumbent will create and maintain relationships to facilitate communication between business owners, developers, elected officials, funders, and community partners to complete projects and grow businesses.
Key Responsibilities:
· Develop and execute targeted outreach strategies for local businesses in the Park Heights Community.
· Identify economic development opportunities and challenges and develop solutions for maximizing the economic potential of the Park Heights.
· Develop and maintain a business directory of all businesses within Park Heights footprint, including businesses that fall outside the main streets district.
· Support businesses with technical assistance, cash flow analysis and other guidance as needed.
· Identify resource gaps and deficits that can be addressed with innovative solutions.
· Supervise the Main Streets Manager and other support staff.
Required Qualifications
· Develops and maintains effective working relationships with private companies and public agencies to identify new business prospects and strategic partnership opportunities, and existing business clients in need of assistance.
· Exceptional verbal and in-person communication skills and experience working with a diverse constituency of clients; Ability to explain complex concepts or programs in plain language to ensure understanding.
· Exceptional writing and presentation skills and experience communicating effectively in a range or written forms to a wide range of audiences
· Experience in Business Development or Economic Development with a track record of positive results and increasing responsibility.
· Has the ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse internal and external groups including elected officials, business, community, and civic organizations.
· Works well both in a team environment and independently and maintains a positive attitude and demeanor.
· Demonstrates strong, ethical character and passion for the organization’s mission.
Other qualifications desired, but not required:
· At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in business development and/or economic development.
· At least two years of supervisory experience
