Job Description

The Bar Manager is primarily responsible for:

  • Managing the Festival’s alcohol sales program
  • Responsible for Emergency Egress procedures
  • Ensuring we remain staffed and on budget

Organizational Profile

Founded in 1938, Stern Grove Festival is an admission-free summer performing arts festival in San Francisco. Now entering its 88th season, the Festival draws over 100,000 people during its ten-week series of world class performances in the outdoor setting of Sigmund Stern Grove. Past seasons have included performing artists from around the world, including The Flaming Lips, Bob Moses, Chaka Khan, San Francisco Symphony, Kool & the Gang, Los Lobos, Smokey Robinson, Ziggy Marley, Carlos Santana, Allen Stone, and Janelle Monae.

Reporting Relationships

The Bar Manager reports directly to the Operations Manager. The following positions report to the Bar Manager: Bar Tenders, Barbacks, and ID Checkers/Security. In addition, the Bar Manager works closely with the Safety and House Managers to ensure safe and successful operations.

Position Description

As the Bar Manager for Stern Grove Festival you will oversee all aspects of the festival's beverage service, ensuring the smooth operation of multiple bars and delivering an exceptional experience for our guests. You will lead a team of bartenders, bar backs, ID checkers and, manage inventory and supplies, and uphold the highest standards of customer service and responsible RBS alcohol service practices as developed by the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) of California.. This position is perfect for individuals with strong leadership skills, extensive hospitality experience, and a passion for creating memorable experiences.

Working Arrangement and Hours

  • Must be available every Sunday: May 18, 2025 - August 17, 2024
  • *except Memorial Day Weekend
  • Must be available Saturdays in June + August 16th
  • Up to 16 hours per week in April
  • Up to 24 hours weekly advance and onsite venue work from May - August

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a team including bartenders, assistant bar managers, bar backs, ID checkers and security providing guidance, support, and training as needed.
  • Develop and implement beverage menus, including specialty cocktails, beers, wines, and non-alcoholic options, in collaboration with festival organizers.
  • Manage inventory levels, ordering, and stock rotation to ensure adequate supplies are available throughout the event.
  • Oversee setup and breakdown of bar areas, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Monitor and enforce responsible alcohol service practices, including checking identification and preventing overconsumption.
  • Handle cash and credit transactions, reconcile cash drawers, and maintain accurate records of sales and expenses.
  • Coordinate with festival operations manager, vendors, and other staff members to ensure seamless operations and a positive guest experience.
  • Address any issues or concerns that arise during the event, resolving conflicts and providing exceptional customer service.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown of the bar area, tent, coolers, and supplies before and after each shift.

Requirements

  • Must provide valid RBS certification. (More Info)
  • Previous experience in a management role within the hospitality industry, preferably in a festival, bar, fair or event setting.
  • Provided training to bartenders and additional staff on POS system operation and troubleshooting techniques to improve overall efficiency and reduce errors.
  • Become an expert on the POS system and have strong knowledge of techniques to eliminate downtime and quick problem solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team to achieve common goals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with guests, staff, and vendors.
  • In-depth knowledge of beverage service techniques, including mixology, beer, and wine selection, and familiarity with industry trends.
  • Understanding of relevant laws and regulations governing alcohol service and a commitment to upholding compliance standards.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities and situations.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and able to work all 2024 SGF event days including working evenings, weekends, and holidays on off event days.
  • Provide detailed breakdown of events sales, customer habits, and all products sold each and every event. Due on Monday following each Stern Grove Festival date.

Reporting Relationships:

Bartending Staff are part of the Operations Department. Bartending Staff report directly to their Bar Manager under the direction of the Festival Operations Manager.

Compensation

$35 per hour plus a split of 10% of all bar donations from patrons for shifts you work. Donations will be added as one lump sum at the end of the season to your last paycheck.
