Job Description
Description Buena Vista University, a private, nationally recognized Midwestern baccalaureate institution located on the shores of a 3,200-acre natural lake, invites applications for a tenure track position in Clinical or Counseling Psychology at the Assistant Professor level to begin in August 2025. Our undergraduate psychology program is one of the strongest at the university, with students who are excited to attend conferences, participate in internships, and engage in innovative classes. We have an active Psychology Club and Psi Chi chapter. Many of our students move forward into one of our two accredited master's programs in counseling. While our faculty mentor students in undergraduate-level research, they are not required to publish their research or get grants to successfully achieve tenure because excellence in teaching and service to the university are prioritized.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses based on the needs of the department, but we are especially interested in people who can teach Mental Disorders, Counseling, and General Psychology. You may also design and teach specialty courses in areas of your interest. The successful candidate will have a commitment to diversity, mentoring students, and excellence in teaching. Ph.D. required.
This position is a full-time, 10-month appointment, but you may discuss continuing to work with private counseling clients, if desired. Your teaching schedule is flexible and can accommodate seeing some clients during the week and summers when off contract. BVU provides faculty members mentorship, recurring development resources (such as paying for your CEUs or licensing fees), and an environment conducive to professional growth, success, and advancement. This includes a small, friendly department and funding to attend conferences on teaching and/or research. BVU also offers travel courses to international locations with students, although this is completely optional. The salary is commensurate with credentials and experience and is typical of Midwestern private schools; optional summer online courses are available if desired for additional compensation.
Review of applications will begin October 1, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled.
We encourage applications from women, BIPOC individuals, people with disabilities, people within the LGBTQ+ community, veterans, and members of other underrepresented communities. We actively work to build and sustain a diverse and culturally vibrant campus which promotes employee and student success and retention. We are looking for candidates who are excited to work in the Midwest at a financially sound, small, private university. BVU has an enrollment of about 800 full-time residential students and about 1400 online students, plus eight master's programs. The Storm Lake community has a population of approximately 11,000, a low cost of living, and is one of the most ethnically diverse small cities in Iowa.
Interested applicants should send a cover letter, CV, teaching statement including how you include diversity in the classroom, teaching evaluations (if available), contact information for references, and graduate school transcripts through the electronic application or to the Office of the Provost, Buena Vista University, 610 West Fourth Street, Storm Lake, IA, 50588 or e-mail humanresources@bvu.edu.
Buena Vista University is an EOE/ADA/Smoke-Free Employer and especially welcomes applications from individuals who will contribute to any aspect of the university's diversity. A background check will be conducted on the final candidate.
