Overview:

The Administrative Director of Vocal Arts plays a key leadership role in the administrative, artistic, and financial operations of the Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts. Reporting to the Artistic Director of Vocal Arts, and the Dean and Director of the Music Division, this role works closely with artistic leadership to develop and implement the department's curricular and artistic programs and long-term strategic planning.


In collaboration with artistic leadership, this position oversees the development of the department's master calendars and schedules, aligning artistic, curricular, and institutional priorities. This role also serves as the lead producer and oversees the artistic administration of the Juilliard Opera season and all curricular and co-curricular performance activities. Leading a team of the seven full-time Vocal Arts administrative staff, this position also manages the Piano Fellowship program, Opera Directing Fellowship program, staff pianists, and other recurring departmental programs and positions.

This position oversees all aspects of Vocal Arts faculty, student, and guest artist administration across the department's three degree programs (undergraduate, graduate, and artist diploma), and manages faculty and student issues, delegating responsibilities in this area and collaborating with Artistic and Associate Artistic Directors as needed. This position also serves as a strategic partner to the Artistic Director on student recruitment initiatives and long-term faculty development.


This role builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders of the department, coordinating efforts to support the department's public presence.


The salary range for this role is $100,000-$110,000 per year.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Oversees the planning, development, and implementation of all performance activities and curricular initiatives for current and future seasons (including Juilliard Opera productions, concert operas, recitals, concerts, master classes, residencies, workshops, classes, and special projects); Oversees creation and implementation of master calendar for all departmental activities.
  • Manages all Vocal Arts student and faculty administration. Monitors students' academic progress, addressing concerns and serving as department liaison with Dean's Office, Provost's Office, Academic Affairs, and Registrar.
  • Oversees department-wide budget development and tracking, working closely with the Finance department to ensure strategic budget planning.
  • Oversees artistic administration and engagement processes for all guest artists and faculty, including contract negotiation and tracking artistic assignments; manages all contracting and hiring processes for the Vocal Arts department.
  • Responsible for high-level information tracking and analysis of schedule information, and resource needs and allocation (including faculty and pianists), culminating in semester-long and year-end recommendations for future budgetary planning.
  • Manages admissions and recruitment initiatives for all programs, working closely with the Admissions Office, Voice and Vocal Arts Faculty, and Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Directors.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with guest artists, departmental VIPs, industry and external colleagues and key stakeholders, working closely with the Development Department, Communications and Marketing Department, and senior administration.
  • Manages and guides the professional development of the Vocal Arts administrative team.
  • Manages recurring departmental programs and positions, including the Piano Fellowship, Opera Directing Fellowship, staff pianists, and others.
  • Serves as the lead administrator for Juilliard's Summer Voice program for high school-aged singers, collaborating on curriculum development and managing appropriate faculty and staff, and enrollment.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Five+ years of professional experience in arts administration or higher education, including producing high-level events or performances
  • Experience working with prominent artists at the highest professional level (including directors, conductors, performers, agents, and educators)
  • High-level skills working with students and faculty in a conservatory environment or professional young artist program, including knowledge of the curricular needs of conservatory-level classical singers
  • Understanding of and appreciation for classical music, especially vocal repertoire and opera; Ability to read music and piano/vocal scores
  • Ability to work inclusively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong decision making and leadership skills, and the ability to assess, prioritize, and find creative solutions when problem-solving
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and integrity under pressure while managing multiple projects simultaneously in a busy environment, demonstrating the ability to meet deadlines independently and collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Must be available on evenings and weekends if necessary for certain projects or productions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
Preferred Background:
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Prior experience managing and supervising a team
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Working knowledge of arts-focused scheduling software such as ArtsVision and ASIMUT
